Bio:
Ana, from Laramie, Wyoming, developed a strong interest in geophysics while earning her Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Wyoming. She further pursued this passion at Colorado School of Mines, where she conducted research with the Fiber Optics Research Group on flow loop monitoring. After graduating, Ana worked at Newmont doing both cybersecurity and geoscience subsequently completing two geophysics internships at BP. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Geophysics, focusing on borehole and pipeline monitoring using distributed fiber optics. Her research has earned her the George R. Pickett Scholarship and the Top Student Poster Award at IMAGE 2023.
Abstract:
Monitoring a gas hydrate field with Distributed Temperature Sensing for long-term well integrity
This study demonstrates the potential of Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) for long-term monitoring of wellbore integrity in a gas hydrate field on Alaska’s North Slope. DTS technology was used to continuously measure temperature changes along a plugged wellbore over two years, revealing subtle thermal anomalies that may indicate gas hydrate formation and fluid migration outside the well casing. The anomalies, characterized by specific thermal patterns, were analyzed alongside well logs and wellhead pressure data, suggesting a significant link between subsurface events and gas migration near the wellbore. These findings underscore DTS as a valuable tool for detecting changes in wellbore conditions and ensuring long-term integrity in complex subsurface environments.
