2019 Increase in Membership Dues
Denver Geophysical Society’s Executive Committee are writing you today with respect to increasing our annual membership dues. We offer this after much discussion and analysis of the fiscal needs of maintaining a strong society for the practice of geophysics.
Rationale
- DGS has only had one increase in membership dues in the last 15 years. To put this in perspective, we last had an increase in 2003. Since then, according to the consumer price index, inflationary costs have increased 77%. The cost of a stamp in 2003 was 34 cents and a gallon of gas was $1.52. Over time, increased inflationary operational costs are outstripping our current budget capacity. Like everyone else, our society has had to make adjustments to respond to the rising cost of inflation. In our effort to absorb these costs (and try our best not to pass along these increases to our members), we have become overly dependent on projected profits from our annual 3D Seismic Symposium conference and golf tournament. As these profits can be unpredictable, the stability of our society’s fiscal solvency cannot be assured when conferences are not consistently and significantly profitable.
- DGS’s Executive Committee has worked diligently over the past few years to review the fiscal forecast and determined that bothcost containment measures and revenue increase measures were necessary in order for DGS to continue to provide valuable services to our members. Cost containment measures enacted included cuts in the following budget items: quarterly happy hours, Rockies game, ski day and Student Challenge Bowl (location and the event itself); monthly luncheon relocation, relocation of the 3DSS, overhead costs; employee and office expenses. This resulted in a savings of over $25,000.
