Extracting Wolfberry Lithofacies and Geomechanics from 3D Seismic with Optimal Data Integration

Wolfcamp and Spraberry (Wolfberry) organic-rich mudstones are currently undergoing extensive horizontal development in the Midland Basin. Horizontal target selection, geosteering, horizontal development plans and optimal hydraulic fracturing strategies could benefit from a 3D mapping and understanding of reservoir lithofacies and geomechanical properties. We utilize a familiar workflow that achieves this through a rigorous integration of 3D seismic, well log and core facies fabric and analytical data.  The workflow requires a properly processed seismic dataset as input, seismic inversion deliverables (Ip and Is) that are calculated from the seismic, and a multidisciplinary calibration. Outputs include a 3D distribution of facies fabrics and geomechanical properties.

The multidisciplinary calibration highlighted in this talk consists of a) sequence stratigraphic/sedimentologic interpretation revealing debrite and turbiditic flow distribution interbedded with the mudrocks (and the seismic response), b) petrophysically-based facies delineation to aid upscaling and interpretation of the prestack inversion, and c) geomechanical integration which divulges closure pressure distributions. Further, understanding the seismic response of the depositional systems can be aided by HorizonCube@, an extremely high resolution interpretative tool revealing detailed stratal geometries and architecture.  Multidisciplinary calibration is a critical constraint on the final deliverables of this workflow and a key to the quality and scope of the final results.
