Geothermal Energy: A Universe of Potential; A Narrow Path of Profitability Today
Dr. Russell Roundtree
Abstract:
Geothermal energy is a massive source of reliable 24/7 energy available virtually anywhere on the planet. So why isn’t it used more than it is? Well, like most things, it’s complicated. We will unravel some of the different sectors of the business and discuss some particularly interesting areas of lower temperature depleted petroleum reservoirs as a new and inexpensive source of geothermal energy. An introduction to electricity generating technologies and trends that will make geothermal a necessary piece of the renewable and sustainable energy mix will be discussed. Resource estimation approaches and existing sources of data with their nuances will be presented from a geologic and geophysical perspective. Technical gaps between a petroleum geoscientist and a geothermal professional will also be discussed in case you are interested in broadening your skill portfolio.
Dr. Russell Roundtree decided to go into geophysics as a junior in high school and really, never looked back. But his career path has taken him through mineral exploration, oil exploration, now geothermal exploration and all with a healthy dose of computer science along the way. He finished a BS and MS in Geophysics from CSM in the early eighties. Then started working for GSI (first and best), then an extended stint in Latin America, back to Denver to join a start up at the time called Advance Geophysical, then through various service companies and finally ended up at Noble Energy in the Marcellus. About this same time, he started, and finally finished, perhaps the longest PhD in history in Petroleum Engineering at CSM. He now works at Transitional Energy who recently got acquired and is now Gradient Geothermal as a Sr. Engineering Advisor working on prospect evaluation, thermal modeling, and Operational design of geothermal projects in mature petroleum fields throughout the US and in some international settings.
