“Reducing geosteering uncertainty in the Teapot Formation through integrated seismic, LWD resistivity, and tracer diagnostics, Converse County, Wyoming, USA”

Development of the Teapot Formation in Converse County, Wyoming highlights the challenges of horizontal drilling in heterogeneous, low-permeability sandstone reservoirs. The target interval consists of heavily bioturbated muddy sandstone containing rip-up clasts with variable clay content. Numerous small-scale faults further complicate structural interpretation and geosteering, leading to significant uncertainty in well placement.
One of the initial wells drilled in the program demonstrates the impact of this uncertainty. A large portion of the lateral was inadvertently placed outside the preferred reservoir interval. During completion operations the well exhibited extremely low injectivity, requiring significant modification to the stimulation program. Post-completion tracer diagnostics later confirmed limited reservoir contribution along portions of the lateral, and production resulted in lower-than-expected estimated ultimate recoveries (EURs).
Following this result, the development workflow was revised to incorporate logging-while-drilling (LWD) resistivity data, 3D seismic interpretation, and routine tracer diagnostics. Integration of these datasets improved geosteering confidence and well placement, resulting in more consistent production performance across subsequent wells. The Teapot formation in Wyoming is a prime example where multidisciplinary data integration is essential for accurate geosteering and reservoir characterization.
Speaker Bio
Mark Millard has over 19 years of experience as an exploration and development Geologist in nearly every active basin in the United States. He has worked in a multitude of roles from frontier exploration through field development for private PE backed and large public companies. Mark is the author of over 30 papers and/or technical presentations. He was previously the President of the Montana Geological Society, and Technical Session Chair for the 2017 RMS-AAPG Annual Conference. He received the A.I. Levorson Award from the RMS AAPG, and the Frank Kottlowski Memorial award from the AAPG Energy and Minerals Division in 2014. He received his master’s degree from Baylor University in 2007, and Undergraduate degree from BYU- Idaho in 2005 (Cum Laude). His interests outside of geology include building mandolins, guitars, and violins, playing bluegrass music, and ice hockey.
